Man accused of kidnapping, sexually abusing child

ROCKFORD – Winnebago County State’s Attorney Marilyn Hite Ross, on Thursday, announced that a grand jury has
returned an indictment yesterday against 31-year-old Brandon Abell.

Abell is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, child pornography, aggravated kidnapping, traveling to meet a minor, indecent solicitation of a child and grooming.

Prosecutors say those charges stem from a report filed June 22.

“Detectives with the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office met with
witnesses in relation to a predatory criminal sexual assault complaint,” Hite Ross said in a release.

Predatory criminal sexual assault of a child is a Class X felony, punishable by six to 60 years in prison while child pornography, aggravated kidnapping are punishable by six to 30 years.

Traveling to meet a minor and indecent solicitation of a child are Class 3 felonies, punishable by probation or two to five years in prison. Grooming is a Class 4 felony with a sentencing range of one to three years behind bars.

Abell is scheduled to appear in court at 10 a.m., July 30. He’s currently lodged in the Winnebago County Jail. Bond is set at $500,000.
