Man sentenced to 20 years for raping preteen multiple times
MAHOMET, Ill. – A man from Central Illinois was sentenced to 20 years behind bars Thursday for raping a preteen multiple times over a five-year period.
According to the News-Gazette, Gregory Reed, of Mahomet, 43, pleaded guilty last month to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. The assaults occurred between January 2006 and July 2011 in Champaign County. Police became aware of the crimes in 2018, when Reed was serving a 10-year prison for producing child pornography.
During his sentencing hearing, Champaign County Sheriff’s Investigator Tim Beckett testified that four of the victim’s friends accused Reed of touching them sexually and talking to them about sex.
Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Alferink capped her sentencing recommendation at 20 years. Assistant Public Defender Matt Ham, asked the court for the minimum six years, arguing that Reed suffered an abusive childhood.
