Rockford man sentenced to 65 years for 2017 murder
ROCKFORD — A local man was sentenced to 65 years in prison Friday for his role in a fatal shooting that occurred on the city’s northwest side three years ago.
Deon Hart, 25, of Rockford, was found guilty of first-degree murder in November 2018.
May 24, 2017, Rockford officers were dispatched to 3308 Sablewood and found the victim, 30-year-old Lester Sanders, was later pronounced dead. Hart and 30-year-old Van D. Richardson, of Rockford, were developed as suspects.
First-degree murder is a Class M felony punishable by 20 to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Hart faced a possible life sentence sentence because he was found to have discharged a firearm proximately, causing death of Sanders.
Hart is required to serve 100% of his sentence.
Richardson was convicted of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm in October 2018 and is awaiting sentencing.
