Rockford squad car crashes during downtown police chase

ROCKFORD — An officer with the Rockford Police Department was injured Wednesday morning after a squad car crashed downtown during a high-speed chase.

The incident unfolded around 2 a.m., when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the area of Kishwaukee Street and Behr Boulevard in reference to a shooting incident.

Instead of stopping, the suspect vehicle fled at a high rate of speed. The officer gave chase and crashed at the corner of Third and State Streets, ending up in the city-owned parking lot in front of the Irish Rose Saloon. The suspect vehicle fled from the area.

The officer is currently being treated at a local hospital. Injuries are not life threatening.
