Police investigate fatal hit-and-run on Rockford’s near-east side

ROCKFORD — The Rockford Police Department is investigating a fatal hit-and-run that occurred on the city’s near-east side Wednesday morning.

At approximately 3:55 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of East State and Summit streets for a report that a pedestrian had been hit by a car. Officers located a 57-year-old man laying in the roadway and observed that he was in a wheelchair when he struck.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Witnesses told police the suspect vehicle was a gray or gold-colored small pickup truck traveling west on East State Street.
