Guilford opens football season with win over Belvidere

ROCKFORD – The Guilford Vikings rallied to beat Belvidere Friday night to start their abbreviated, six-game football season.

Guilford rallied to send the game into overtime before picking up a touchdown for a 20-14 win.

This is the third season under coach Denny Diduch, who came to Guilford after coaching Forreston to two Class 1A titles. It’s been a struggle to rebuild the Vikings program as Guilford has gone 1-17 over Diduch’s first two seasons.

The win puts Guilford on top of the NIC-10’s Division B along with Freeport, which secured a 42-8 win over rebuilding Jefferson. The J-Hawks went a solid 3-6 under first-year coach Jacob Arnold, but Jefferson has no returning starters.

In other NIC-10 Friday action, Harlem rolled over Auburn 36-12, Boylan blanked East 41-0, and Freeport handled Jefferson 42-8.

Hononegah overpowered Belvidere North 61-0 Saturday.
