Nick Zimmerman selected to lead Winnebago County Public Defender’s Office

ROCKFORD — Nick Zimmerman, a familiar face around the Winnebago County Courthouse, has been selected to lead the public defender’s office.

Zimmerman has spent 10 years as a public defender and has held the position of first deputy since 2017. He will begin his new role April 24, taking over for David Roll, who’s retiring after four years.

Zimmerman was selected by the judges of the 17th Judicial Circuit, which includes Boone and Winnebago counties.

“Nick Zimmerman is dedicated to the core mission of the Public Defender’s Office and brings a record of constructive partnership in the criminal justice system,” Chief Judge Eugene Doherty said in a release. “He is not only an excellent lawyer, but a reliable colleague with proven managerial experience.”

Zimmerman is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin and received his law degree from Northern Illinois University in 2000. He joined the Winnebago County Public Defender’s Office in 2011.
