City of Rockford and Rockford Park District officials will celebrate construction of “Sportscore Downtown on the Rock” at 3 p.m., Friday, April 24.

The “Tip-Off” ceremony will officially begin construction to turn what has been known as the Ingersoll building, 301 S. Water St., into a 104,000-square-foot indoor sports complex. When finished next year, the facility will provide regional and local access to world-class recreational facilities that will include eight volleyball and basketball courts.

Sportscore Downtown is expected to be a hotbed for amateur sports tournaments and help spearhead development of downtown Rockford. The project is part of Reclaiming First!, a joint sports tourism economic development project of the Winnebago County Regional Tourism Facility Board.

Member entities include cities of Loves Park, Rockford, and South Beloit, Winnebago County, villages of Cherry Valley, Machesney Park, Rockton, and Roscoe, Rockford Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Rockford Park District.

Street parking on Madison Street is recommended. Wheelchair accessible parking is available on Water and Walnut streets.
